Our Mission

The Healthier Northshore initiative is dedicated to bringing people, organizations, and resources together to amplify healthier living throughout the St. Tammany and Washington Parishes.

Comprised of leading health systems, government officials, local experts, and community leaders across St. Tammany and Washington Parishes, the Healthier Northshore Initiative serves as a network for healthcare-related education and resources in the region and promotes early detection and prevention to improve the health of our residents.

Changing the status quo by bringing healthcare to you.

Currently, Louisiana ranks 50th in the United States for overall health services and ranks among the lowest for clinical care, health outcomes, and behavioral health. How do we change that?

Rank 50th in Social & Economic Factors

Social & Economic Factors include community and family safety, economic resources, education, social support and engagement. With this in mind, our initiative is focused on bridging the gap between people and local resources to create a support system for struggling families.

Ranks 48th in Physical Environment

Physical Environment metrics include air and water quality, climate change, housing and transit. Our overall wellbeing stems from the environment around us. If we take care of our surroundings, we will take care of ourselves.

Ranks 40th in Clinical Care

Clinical Care includes access to care, preventative clinical services, and quality of care. We understand it is not always easy to get access to quality care. That’s why our initiative is focused on bringing high-quality care to you. This also means preventative education and early detection screenings. Spending more time thinking about your future you’ll spend less time in the doctor’s office.

Ranks 50th in Behaviors

Behaviors data includes sleep health, sexual health, and tobacco use. Tobacco use correlates with preventative care and how you take care of your body. That’s why we strengthen tobacco-free living programs in the area.

Ranks 50th in Health Outcomes

Health Outcomes can be anything from behavioral health, mental health, and physical health to mortality. Being last in the country for health outcomes means the rest of the health and wellness in the area is so underserved that health outcomes are often poor. By strengthening different aspects of health and preventative care, we can change this.

Our Initiative, and Why

The Healthier Northshore Advisory Council was formed in September 2020 amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Now more than ever, healthcare and health education has become less accessible. We are changing that!

We tackle issues like…

  • Mental health
  • Diet & nutrition
  • Staying active
  • Nicotine addiction
  • Early detection & preventative health screenings
  • Preventive everyday wellness
  • Women’s health
  • Prenatal care
  • Pediatrics

Partnered with more than 50 organizations and individuals in leadership, we aim to bring healthcare education to the masses. Together, our partners and resources can encourage healthier lifestyles through community events, existing programs, and collaborations. We advocate for the work already being done while also stimulating new programs.

One member of the Healthier Northshore initiative, Ochsner Health, created a statewide initiative called “40 by 30” to bring Louisiana’s ranking up to 40th by 2030. Taking steps toward a healthier future can start with us. We believe that by starting small, we can take steps toward healthier living throughout the state of Louisiana. We are laying the foundation for healthier living to save and change lives.
